Who we are
Built by health workers, for health workers.
MHPU has represented nursing, medical, midwifery and allied health staff across the Maldives for over three decades — independent, member-led, and accountable to the people who do the work.
Our mission
MHPU exists to make sure no health professional in the Maldives faces an unsafe workplace, an unfair dispute, or a stalled career alone. We represent members in individual cases, bargain collectively on pay and conditions, and campaign publicly for safer, better-resourced health services — from Male' hospitals to the smallest island health centre.
We are independent of any single employer or political party, funded by member subscriptions, and governed by an elected council of working health professionals.
What guides us
Independence — no employer or political control over union decisions.
Solidarity — every member has equal standing, regardless of role or island.
Accountability — leadership is elected and answers directly to members.
Our history
Three decades of representation1993
Founded by a small group of nurses and doctors in Male' seeking a collective voice on pay and safety.
2008
First national collective agreement covering public hospital nursing staff.
2016
Regional representative network extended to cover all inhabited atolls.
2026
Over 4,200 members and an active regional office in Addu City.
